Aikido club encourages cooperative growth

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Exponent) - As opposed to the head-nod or fist-bump greeting common in other sports, Aikido students walk into the gym and bow to the instructor to begin practice.

While people often seek martial arts for its aggressive competition, Purdue students turn to Aikido Club to foster relaxation and group cooperation. Purdue’s version of the club allows students interested in the martial arts to practice in a calm environment that encourages the growth of each student.

This respectful entrance to the practice gym as well as rules against “rough-housing” or “needless contests of strength” set the tone to match the Aikido philosophy.
