WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Exponent) - Boilermakers in the Adopt-A-Grandparent Club love to hear inspiring stories from their adopted grandparents.
“I once met a resident who was 100 years old and took a bus to visit his wife every single day because she lived in another assisted living home,” said Sally Parmlee, president of the club. “Some students don’t even want to walk 10 minutes to class everyday and they are in perfectly good health.”
The purpose of Adopt-A-Grandparent is for Purdue students to build meaningful relationships with elderly citizens in the West Lafayette area. The club hosts activities at a couple of assisted living homes in the area and helps the seniors bake cookies, play games and have ice cream socials. Adopt-A-Grandparent members also have the opportunity to adopt a grandparent, where they can meet with an elderly citizen individually as often as they please.
