Local man hero to seniors

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Some go to line dance, others go for bingo and crafts. Whatever activity interests seniors, at least 80 people show up each day for fellowship at the Center at Jenks Rest. But there's one man who doesn't miss a day, or a chance, to make life better for his fellow seniors.

71-year-old George Custenborder enjoys a good pool game when his work is done. Monday through Friday, from 8:30 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon, Custenborder shows up to volunteer at Jenks Rest.

"I work the desk if they need me at the desk. I've worked the gift shop. I do the 50/50 drawings," said Custenborder.

Custenborder goes where he is needed. For the last five years, he has been as much a part of Jenks Rest as bingo in the afternoon.

"Whatever is needed, he's the kind of go-to guy that you say, 'Oh my gosh, we suddenly need hands,' he's one of the first people. I turn around and say, 'Let's find George,' so he's very helpful," said Catherine Moran, The Center at Jenks Rest Executive Director.

The Center at Jenks Rest serves as a place for Seniors to get together and take part in different activities. They can also share lunch together each day. Late each morning, George ties on an apron and puts on a hat, and begins to prepare to serve lunch, bringing out the silverware and milk.

"I volunteer because it's in my heart and the good Lord give me that. That's my calling I guess," said Custenborder.

But when the work is done, Custenborder enjoys a game of pool. So much so, that he's going to begin teaching a class on how to play pool in March.

Custenborder said The Center at Jenks Rest needs more volunteers. He said you don't have to spend all day, or even every day, like he does. He said a few hours every now and then can make a big difference.
