Darrell Merkel 2012 Golden Apple

The definition for character includes ones reputation, moral or ethical attributes, qualities of honesty, courage, and integrity.  Darrell Merkel a 6th grade Science teacher at Wea Ridge Middle school exemplifies all of that.  Darrell encourages all of his students to speak about their goals and their dreams and helps them realize that no matter what their circumstances are or where they come from they can achieve all their goals and dreams.  He has a positive influence on all of his students both current and past.  Darrell cares about his students both inside and out of the classroom.  Darrell is highly respected by his colleagues who look to him for advice on both a professional and personal levels.  One colleague describes him as a phenomenal teacher because he is everything an educator should be and more.
