WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — A D.A.R.E. officer who has had an impact on many students in West Lafayette is retiring.

Officer Janet Winslow has been with the West Lafayette Police Department for 35 years. For the last 10 years, she's been a D.A.R.E. officer. She's also the school resource officer for both elementary schools.

Winslow will retire this upcoming summer.

She hosted her final D.A.R.E. graduation program Tuesday night. She was emotional as Chief Jason Dombkowski and Mayor John Dennis wished her well.

She said taking on the position and working with kids has been a blessing.

"They really do pay attention to me in the classroom and they do follow along. I really do think they learn something. If they can just remember that and carry it through with them throughout their lives," said Winslow.

Winslow said she's not exactly sure what she'll do after retiring, but she's got a few months to figure it out.
