MULBERRY, Ind. (WLFI) - Months after a harsh winter and flaking paint caused a lead scare in a Clinton County town, people in Mulberry are getting reassurance from an engineering firm.

As News 18 previously reported, Mulberry residents worried that the inside of the water tower may have been just as affected as the outside. The chipping paint was caused by expanding and contracting metals. Some worried that could have released lead into the water.

At Tuesday night's town meeting, Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent Randy Cooper shared what they know so far. He said Dixon Engineering has drained the water tower and has taken samples, and so far they don't think there's cause to suspect lead in the water.

However, they did find specks of epoxy lining, which are now being tested.

Cooper said the town took the opportunity to run other tests too, all of which came back within normal guidelines. However, he said the water tower will need tender loving care.

"The whole exterior of the tower will probably have to be sandblasted, everything removed down to the bare steal. He did assure me that that will be in the reports," said Cooper.

Dixon's inspection results won't be complete for about two weeks. If the tower needs to be sandblasted, Cooper said the town will hold a public hearing.

Cooper said he plans on filling the water tower and putting it back online Wednesday.
