LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — Lafayette Renew and the city of Lafayette are advising the public to avoid disposing coffee grounds into the sink. They say it causes clogs and interferes with city water functions.

Contrary to popular opinion, coffee grounds do not dissolve in water. Large amounts of the grounds can cause drainage problems in city sewers and treatment plants. Lafayette Renew director Brad Talley suggests doing away with coffee grounds in a variety of different ways.

"You either put those in your trash, your recycle or into your garden or something you put them in a compost pile," Talley said. "You can reuse them that way."

Ultimately, doing so affects the water we drink, and the blocked pipes can lead to huge bills.

Neighbor Hayden Kincaid said he has been in the habit of throwing grounds in the trash.

"That's something we thought was common," Kinkaid said.

Talley said to get more people on board with throwing their coffee grounds in the trash, they're putting a call out on social media.

"You know have that awareness out there so that people don't create problems in the collection system," he said.

Lafayette Renew has a hotline to assist people with drainage issues related to coffee or other cooking products. You can reach them at 765-807-1800.
