WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI)-- The summer season is a busy time for drivers, and there's one feature that can be particularly hectic for some. State police are educating those behind the wheel on how to navigate roundabouts safely.

Driving instructor Tom Whaley knows roundabouts are unavoidable for incoming drivers but experienced drivers may not know the rules.

"A lot of the older people, as I talk about to my friends, going through roundabouts and I've had people say 'What's that?'" said Whaley. "A lot of people don't know what they are."

State Police Sergeant Kim Riley said these roundabouts are especially dangerous for semis and large trucks.

"It's really confusing because people don't know what a roundabout is all about," Riley said. "It's best to not even ride alongside them because if you ever see a semi when they're turning, the back end does not follow the front end."

But ultimately, if a driver is in the outside lane, it's their responsibility to pay attention and see what the inside car is doing.

Riley also mentioned roundabouts are a safer alternative to traditional four-way stops. This way if two cars get into an accident it would be a sideswipe rather than a t-bone.
