BROOKSTON, Ind. (WLFI) — A summer camp in Brookston is giving kids the chance to connect after a tragedy. For the 20th year, Hoosier Burn Camp is bringing children together after instances involving fire.

Anthony Hazard has some years under his belt at Hoosier Burn Camp but remembers the reason why he's here. After his bed caught on fire in his camper in 2015, he ran back inside to try and save his little brother, Sam.

"The only reason I survived is that I found a little crack in the tub in the bathroom," Hazard said. "No kidding, it was about a few feet away from the bed as I was trying to drag Sam out."

The program works with young burn survivors throughout the state of Indiana, giving them the chance to connect with others, just like themselves.

Alice Gordon said her granddaughter wanted to come to camp. She was burned while being watched by a babysitter when she was younger. Since then, she's had 41 surgeries for her burns.

"They introduced us to the Hoosier Burn Camp and ever since it has been a god sent for us," said Gordon. "Because they not only help her but they help us too."

The program connects families with surrounding fire services and hospitals.

Executive Director Mark Koopman said when you volunteer here, it's an instant connection.

"Folks come in wanting to serve and wanting to give, but it does something to them, it's like a healthy relationship," Koopman said. "When you give and you get back, and it's reciprocated, you just wish the rest of the world would work like that too."

The camp is free for children and will be hosting a visitors day on Wednesday, May 30. For more information, you can visit their website here.
