ROMNEY, Ind. (WLFI) - Romney residents now know how much it will cost them for a new sanitary sewer system.
A public meeting was held Monday night by the board members for the Romney Regional Sewer District.
Starting in April, residents will pay a monthly rate of $40 during the construction period. Once construction is complete, residents will pay a monthly fee of $84. That's expected to happen in early 2019.
Neighbors News 18 talked to say this information is really what they wanted to know.
"Being a homeowner is just kind of a process you're not really sure what to expect sometimes. You know, there's lots of rumors around town, but I came to find out for myself," said Joyce Hampton.
"The last meeting, it was a little foggy on what their monthly billing would be for each resident, so I came out just to see what the bills would be like," said Michelle Hardaway.
Failing septic systems are a problem in the area. Board members said 75 percent of the homes in Romney discharge to ditches and streams, which is not compliant with regulations. It's also a health hazard.
Construction is expected to begin within the next few weeks.
