TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. (WFLI) — Tipppecanoe County Sheriff Barry Richard is in the race for re-election.

Richard said he's more excited for this race than he was when he first ran for sheriff.

He faces two other Republicans this May.

West Lafayette Police Chief Jason Dombkowski and Tippecanoe County Lieutenant John 'Woody' Ricks have also filed to run for sheriff.

Richard welcomes other candidates with different ideas, but he believes he is the best for the job.

"I feel I am strongest because people know what kind of quality I represent and they know who I am," said Richard. "It's not like a campaign and that's why I've not had to sign and say I'm going to run a year and a half ago."

Sheriff Richard said he's treating this like a job interview and the community is the employer.

"They're the ones that are going to hire or not hire somebody," said Richard. "So, I feel that we should give the community, our voters, the opportunity to interview us and then make their decision on who they would like to hire as their next sheriff."

He said he would be willing to particpate in an organized debate with his opponents on WLFI. Both Domkowski and Ricks agreed to one as well.

We are still in the process of organizing the details of that debate, but will post the information when it's available.

The primary is set for May 8.
