TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind, (WLFI) — A Clarks Hill man who pleaded guilty to robbing a gas station near Purdue's campus will spend time behind bars.
25-year-old Lon Atwell was sentenced to five and half years in the department of corrections and four years probation. The sentence was originally set at a total of ten years, however, it was reduced by six months for the completion of a High School Equivalency program.
Atwell pleaded guilty to Robbery with a Deadly Weapon in November.
In late May, a robbery was reported at the Circle K on Northwestern Avenue across from Mackey Arena.
Police said a robber showed a black, baton-type weapon.
When the clerk couldn't open the safe, investigators say the robber tried to jump behind the counter.
That's when the clerk ran from the store.
Police say lottery tickets and several packs of cigarettes were stolen during the incident.
Court documents say that the police were tipped off when an attempt was made to cash some of the tickets stolen in the robbery.
Atwell's criminal history includes two Tippecanoe County convictions, one in 2013 for criminal mischief and one in 2016 for theft.
