LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The extreme cold has caused problems for people all over Greater Lafayette. City employees said when they got to work Tuesday, it was extremely cold inside the Morton Center.

Offices were closed all day as crews worked to restore heat. The building runs on gas and both the meter and gas main broke, which caused a boiler to break.

Later in the day, crews were trying to fix the heat when a pipe exploded. Steam filled the building and set off the fire alarm.

When firefighters got there, they gave an all clear within minutes. Mayor John Dennis said even though they weren't in the building today, city employees were still able to work.

"A lot of folks are able to work remotely, a lot of folks are taking their laptops home and are able to continue doing the business of city government at least here in West Lafayette from home," said Mayor Dennis.

Heat was restored to the building and they plan to re-open Wednesday.

State Farm Agent, Trent Johnson and Mr. & Mrs. Tire General Manager Curtis Lewis said their phones were ringing all day as well.

Both agree when it's this cold, sometimes there isn't much you can do. When it comes to your car, Lewis said have your batteries and tire pressure checked.

Johnson said keeping your thermostat set at the same temperature both day and night can help.
